Noun
Names of persons, places, animals, or things are called Noun.
Example: Abdal, Peshawar, Lion, chair, etc.
In the following sentence (Aitizaz, Peshawar & Car) is Noun.
- Aitizaz is going to Peshawar in his Car.
Other Examples are
- Zarar is the name of a person.
- Karachi is the name of a city.
- Car is the name of a thing.
Types of Noun
The following are the types of noun.
Common Noun
The name of any Non-specific person, place, or thing is called Common Noun.
Example: Boy, Cow, country, etc.
In simple words, common noun are names that we give in general to all things, person, and place.
Proper Noun
Name of any specific person, place, or thing is called Proper Noun.
Example: Abdal-name of a person, puppy-name of a dog, Pakistan-name of the country etc.
In simple words, proper noun are special names given to specific persons, place,s or things.
Example: Haris Khan is a brave boy.
So in the above sentence (Haris khan) is a proper noun.
Singular noun
A singular noun refers to one person, place, or thing only.
Example: one ball, one doll, one glass, one mirror, one book, etc.
So in singular noun, we are concerned with only one thing like we are talking about only one thing.
Example:
- She could not see the girl in the crowd.
- She left her bag in the school.
- The doctor gave me medicine.
Plural noun
Plural noun refers to more than one person, place, or thing.
Example: Two balls, three dolls, five glasses, two mirrors, etc.
So in plural noun, we are concerned with more than one thing.
Example:
- He was trying to catch the balls.
- The cat is eating bananas.
Countable Noun
Simply countable noun are those that can be counted.
Example: Girl or Girls, Boy or Boys, Car or Cats etc.
Uncountable Noun
Uncountable Noun are concepts that we cannot count.
For example: we cannot count “water” but we can count “bottles of water”.
Here are some more examples of uncountable noun.
- Music, Art, Love, Happiness
- Electricity, Gas, Power
- Advice, Information, News
- Rice, Sugar, Butter, Water
Masculine Noun
We use masculine for (Male). So masculine noun are words for Men, Boys and Male Animals, etc.
Example: man, prince, father Etc.
Feminine Noun
We use Feminine for (Female). So Feminine noun are words for women, girls, and female animals, etc.
Example: Girl, Queen, sister, lioness, Hen, Aunt, etc.
Concrete Noun
Concrete noun or it is also called material noun. So it is a noun that has physical existence.
Example: Table, Flower, Clock, etc.
- The door is locked.
- Where is your Book?
- He moved the chair into place.
- She always made her bed before leaving for school.
Abstract Noun
Abstract noun refers to feelings, concepts, and quantity, etc. or we can also say that an abstract noun is a noun that has no physical existence.
Example: Wisdom, Sadness, Fear, etc.
- He is feeling pain.
- Her art teacher admired her creativity.
Collective Noun
It is the name of a group or collection of the same kind of person, animal, or things.
Example: An Army is made up of many soldiers.
A crowd is made up of many people.
