Introduction
Here in this very article, we will be dealing with its definition of it, some general explanations for understanding, answering a few questions, and many more for the clearance of the concept of literature.
Literature
Introducing the literature with the definition of it that Some said it is derived from a Greek word while other say it is derived from a Latin word. Agreeing with the Latin word, the word Literature comes from the word “littera” which means letters of the alphabet “.
Now my concept about Literature is that Literature is a very broad term to be explained with one definition. It is a very vast subject. The most common definition of Literature is that “ The study of LIFE”. Now the Literature definition has some boundaries that is every everything written comes under the category of Literature.
Now one can say the writings on the wall or in the newspaper must be literature. The answer is No, it is known as art. The aesthetic sense is important which appeals to you, which makes you enjoy the one. Anything beautiful WRITTEN about life comes under literature.
Anything you say about literature is correct. Any definition is correct up to some extent but not completely. You can say anything around you in written form is literature but the boundaries should be kept in mind.
Now we will deal with how the expert define the Literature in their own ways and will be trying to understand it.
Definition
The first definition was done by an author Scylar in late 1982 and early 1983. He defines literature as the word meaning “any writing on a subject, the body of published work concerning with a particular subject”.
He defines Literature but as far as I know, it was the first attempt to be defined as it incomplete definition. As already being told that everything you say about Literature is correct. Later on in 1997, an author and scholar named Pallanen described Literature in his own way “ Literature refers to published writings in a particular style on a particular subject”. Now in both the famous definitions of Literature, one thing is common, it is in written form.
History
Now going towards the Literature HISTORY that how literature has developed. To understand one’s thoughts and the messages they have in their mind, people started to seek out ways of communication, so they first started Gesture language, and with the development, there came the use of tongue, (how this thing originates is separate debate), And with that the idea of speaking develop.
As the people had started speaking this form of literature Has developed and is known as Oral literature. There were people called bards who Were having good And they were transferring the knowledge from one part to another. After that, the number of bards started decreasing and there was no one to transfer the knowledge to everyone so they started writing rather they were picturing something inside The Cave which was an indication that there were some people who were trying to convey that message.
from that, the idea of writing developed, and with the passage of time and the development of the printing press people were interested in writing so that their message and what things they have in their mind can be conveyed to each and everyone Even to the people coming after them. so that’s how the idea of written literature develope
Now dealing with the types of literature whereas literature is divided into many types but some of the major types are given below
Poetry
Poetry is basically a form of literature which is completely imaginative. Here you are giving access to the mind and the imagination of the poet. Different authors have define poetry on their own way some say it is the spontaneous flow of thoughts and many more definitions are there. The poetry has a specific language(figurative language) , the specific diction, there is rhyme in it, poetic devices are used in the poetry to make it beautiful and to make it understandable for the people to be read that people enjoyed the reading.
Drama
Drama is another form of literature which was and which is perform on the stage. It has characters, dialogs monologs, a plot. Drama is performed in episodes. Simply it is known as a play performed at the stage in the front of so many audience. It is only the special type of literature which is used to experience the listening as well as the visual experiences.
Prose
Prose writing is the most simple writing in literature. It is usually used in the daily life writing. It may use figurative language, the dialogue. Sometimes may use characters. Now prose writing is basically divided into two categories
The Primary and The Secondary
In the primary, there comes the writing of fiction. Fiction is totally imaginative writing and in its subcategories of fiction, there are a novel, novellas, and short stories. In the secondary category, there comes nonfictional writing having subgenres of autobiography essays and journals.
Now dealing with the question of why literature still exists and what is the importance of literature or word literature can teach us.
The answer to all these questions is that it’s in human nature to do something to be remembered forever, to be in the heart of the people forever, it’s simply human nature. People have started taking part in literature and in writing just because it was their wish and their desire to be in the hearts of so many people so the people can remember them so they have done such a work who is liked by the people so obviously if people like someone’s work they like the author as well so that’s why literature from the beginning till now exists
What is the importance of literature?
The importance of literature is that it’s appealing to your aesthetic senses. Some people will like the poetry others will really like the drama and some people will like the prose form. There are also many forms of literature but the major is these three so when you go through any of them.
For example, you go through poetry and you like the rhyming scheme and the figurative language used by the author to make it beautiful and appealing to your aesthetic senses. It gives you happiness to be read more and more so you will like these things and your desire for the knowledge will be increased and you will be wanting to gain more and more knowledge about the poetry, about the author, about the people of that time why he or she has written that what was the circumstances, people will get to know about their history, their culture, their values their traditions, give them an emotional attachment to their ancestors, helps in the development of society and many more.
